Slovakia: Journalist Training on Covering Sex Work Issues

The training covered number of different topics, such as online journalism, the specifics of radio, TV and print journalism, etc. But the topic on ethics in covering sex work caused an exceptionally big interest. „All the participants took an active role in the discussion and were interested mostly in correct terminology and in our work with media“ – says Lubica Tornoczyova. „The interest was so big that we did not have time to discuss all the topics I had prepared. All the participants agreed such training is highly needed for the media and Odyseus was asked to take a more active role in the future in educating students of journalism to be more sensitive in the topic and prepare them for work with sex workers“, says Tornoczyova.

It was the first time for the Odyseus to take part in such type of training and feedbacks were very positive. The seminar, financed trough a private foundation of the UniCredit Bank of Italy, had 15 participants from Slovakia and 15 from Czech Republic, some students of journalism and some media reporters.

„For me it was a great experience to share our knowledge and know-how. Stigma against sex workers is reinforced by their image and portrayal in media. It can be changed only in a closer collaboration between media and civil society organizations, with participation of sex workers“, concluded Tornoczyova.

SWAN members and other organizations interested in the topic are welcomed to contact Lubica Tornoczyova.
